Rostov is one more ancient Russian town, nevertheless it captures your eye with the tranquillity and beauty of the landscape. It's one of the most picturesque places in the whole Golden Ring chain of towns.

Rostov is located on the shores of Lake Nero, 202 kilometers (126 mi) northeast of Moscow. The town dates back to the 9th century, but the Kremlin is a wonderful example of 17th century architecture.

You can climb the belltower from which all the vast area around will come into view, visit the Assumption Cathedral, the oldest church in Rostov, or go inside curious local museums, but definetely visit the lake after.
Enamel museum
Duration: 2h

The local Rostov museum of enamel will strike you with the sophisticated patterns and a huge variety of topics used as a motif for ornamentation. This art has been known since the 18th century and it has become a real brand for Rostov town. All the items exhibited in the museum are very delicate and subtle.

You can also try yourself in a master-class where you will learn how to apply enamel and as a result you will get a hand-made souvenir, and I'm sure you'll start to appreciate this art even more.
Lake Nero
Duration: 30 min or more

The name of the lake may remind you of the Roman emperor Nero, but it has nothing to do with it. The word "nero" means "marshland" in the language of the tribes that inhabited this area 6 thousand years ago and who gave such a name to the lake.

Lake Nero is the best spot for observing the Rostov Kremlin. Take your camera with you and get wonderful snapshots of Russian antiquities.
